Serving as the Deputy Director of the Mississippi Board of Pharmacy is both an honor and a privilege. The mission of the Board of Pharmacy is to protect the citizens of Mississippi through the regulation of pharmacy and through setting standards that ensure safety and quality health care for our citizens. I could not ask for a more noble mission.
The profession of pharmacy and the landscape of health care continues to change in Mississippi and throughout our country. Change is inevitable and a necessary part of life. But changes must always be measured by our foundational mission and responsibility to the citizens. The Mississippi Board of Pharmacy must keep its eye on the constant pressures placed on the practice of pharmacy and how those pressures affect the public. However, the responsibility to protect the public does not end with the Mississippi Board of Pharmacy. The Board, staff of the Board and the licensees, permittees and registrants of the Board must all share in this responsibility. As we consider the future, the horizon is dotted with potential threats and opportunities for our entire health care system – including pharmacy.
Increasing our exposure by educating legislators, pharmacy and other health care professionals and the public is vital to our mission success. I respectfully challenge all of us to constantly look for opportunities to educate and encourage everyone to get involved by communicating to the Board, through the various associations and in our dialog with the public. We must make sure pharmacy is respected as an integral part of the overall health care solution and not part of the problem. Getting involved can only expand the horizons of pharmacy and ensure the safety and quality of health care for the citizens of Mississippi.
